Each voice is as unique & diverse as the individual it belongs to. Just as there are multiple facets of a student’s personality, so are their voices and learning styles. We all learn in different ways, and my job is to assimilate to the voice and person in front of me. To teach the whole voice, you must understand the whole person.
I prefer to stay away from vague imagery, but instead stick to concrete descriptions of the musculature and vocal apparatus. I want my students to have a basic understanding of their instrument & how it functions so that they can become great teachers as well.
I have an MM in vocal pedagogy, so even though my teaching is rooted in voice science, I am not a voice science teacher. It is simply my set of tools.
I believe that a strong bel canto foundation is required to sing any genre of music, just as Shakespeare strengthens contemporary theater, and ballet is foundational to contemporary dance.
An acute audio awareness of the correct sound is crucial to identify and fix vocal technique. I instruct students based on what I see on the outside and hear at the vocal fold level. Efficiency is key in forming a healthy voice in all genres.
I believe the essence & use of free airflow inhalation/exhalation for speaking and singing are very similar. We start with the speaking voice and breathing for life habits first, creating a foundation for support and sustaining that speech in singing.
I’m not interested in producing “cookie-cutter” singers. Now more than ever, audiences crave variety. This means that the industry hires singers with all different “sized” voices, different colors, timbre & projection. I cherish the uniqueness of all voices, therefore my goal is to help the singer find their own unique and healthfully produced sound. Being unique gets one hired, and a healthy method ensures longevity!
My teaching method has been especially successful in producing a performer that can sing any genre. With Classical foundations and understanding of contemporary genres, I provide the tools and techniques to easily move between both.
My students continue to be working professionals & competition winners in both the Classical and Musical Theater worlds & I am quite proud of their successes!
